The Orcas of SeaWorld San Antonio

SeaWorld San Antonio is the largest and youngest of the three SeaWorld parks. Unlike the other two parks, this park uses pacific white sided dolphins and beluga whales in it's whale and dolphin show "Viva". It also has one of the largest killer whale facilities in the United States. In 2008, SeaWorld San Antonio celebrated it's 20th anniversry (the park opened in 1988). Kayla of SWF was the first killer whale born at SWT. It made national headlines in 1993 with the birth of its first second generation orca, Keet, who still lives there today. SeaWorld San Antonio houses 5 orcas-Takara, Kyuqout, Keet, Unna, and Tuar.

Takara

Gender: Female
Length and Weight: 17 feet and 5,000 pounds
Age: 18
Date of Birth: July 9, 1991
Parks: SeaWorld California, SeaWorld Florida and SeaWorld Texas
Breed: 100% Icelandic

Takara was the first captive-born orca to be artifically insemated and produce a calf out it. She is a very gentle and interactive orca along with her son Trua. When she she lived at SeaWorld Orlando, Takara and her son Trua were mainly seen with Taima and her daugther Malia and the four often performed together in "Believe" shows. Takara was also very play and enjoyed the company of other SWF orcas(has not met Tillikum until late 2008) at the park. When she first arrived at the Orlando Park in 2004 with her daugther Kohana(now a Loro Parque), she was mainly seen with Kalina and her daugther Skyla(also at Loro Parque) and they would do shows together. Sometimes when Taima and Malia were not around, she and Trua would been seen with Kalina and spend time together. When Takara was still at SeaWorld San Diego, she was very close with her mother Kasatka and several other tankmates including her daugther Kohana, and half-brother Nakai. Takara also appeared on Animal Planet's That's My Baby when she was pregnant and gave birth to Kohana in 2002 along with trainers Ken Peters and Wendy Carlile. Today, Takara lives at SeaWorld San Antonio with her half brother Keet(by Kotar*), his aunt Unna, and their two other male compaions Ky, and Tuar(Unna and Ky's half brother by Tillikum). Lately, she has been seen with a dominate male orca named Kyuqout, who has taken a liking to Takara.

Kyuqout

Gender: Male
Length and Weight: 19 feet and 7,000 pounds
Age: 17
Date of Birth: December 24, 1991
Parks: Sealand of the Pacific and SeaWorld Texas
Breed: 100% Icelandic

Kyuqout is the dominant male at SeaWorld Texas. He was actually born at Sealand of the Pacific in British Columbia which closed in 1992 after his parents accidentaly drowned an employee at the facility. When his mother, Hadia II* was the matriach of the SWT pod, he was able to get away with any mischeiff he gets into. He and his mother had a very close relationship. Sadly, Hadia II died in 2001, leaving Ky depressed and not wanting to do any shows for several months. Ky was involved in an accident in 2004 with one of his handlers as a result of hormones from sexual matrurity. Although Ky dose not do waterwork with any of his trainers, he is a great performer and cooperates well during private training sessions. He is a moody orca and only the most experience trainers can work with him. Ky and Keet used to be playmates as both calves and adolecents. Now, they do not get along that great as a result of Ky's high dominance scale. He is usually seen with his two half siblings Tuar and Unna. Recently, he has been seen with his new tankmate from Orlando, Takara.

Keet

Gender: Male
Length and Weight: 18 feet and 6,500 pounds
Age: 16
Date of Birth: February 2, 1993
Parks: SeaWorld Texas, California, and Ohio
Breed: 25% Southern Resident and 75% Icelandic

Keet was the first second generation orca born in human care. His mother Kalina was 7 years old when she gave birth to Keet and was her first calf. When he was a year and a half old, Keet was seperated from his mother to support her next pregnancy. For a while, he was a little depressive but was taken in by another female named Hadia II and Keet's own aunt Katherina*. After Keet moved to California in 1999, he was "adopted" by an elderly killer whale named Corky who cared for him as if he were her own calf. He is a laid back, and gentle (this is why he is called the Corky of SWT) animal who loves to relax by swimming very slow laps, sleeping, and play with his tounge and blow bubbles at both human guests and trainers. Keet is a great performer who dose water work very well and like his half brother Tuar, he is mainly used by beginning trainers and training sessions where campers and VIP groups are involved. He and Ky used to be best friends, but because of his tankmate's role as a dominant animal, the two no longer act as playmates so they are sperated. Keet has fathered two calves, one of whom, Halyn*, a juvenile killer whale form a bond with him until her death in 2008. Keet is usually kept by himself, but sometimes, he will play with the other animals, execpt for Ky when he has that moment.

Date of Birth: December 27, 1996
Parks: SeaWorld Florida and Texas
Breed: 100% Icelandic

Unna is the Matriach at SWT. She makes sure that everything within her little pod run fine. She also knows some amazing behaviors that none of the other whales know. She is a very sweet animal towards other whales and trainers. As the dominate female at the park, she is able to hadle any problem that come across her or any of her tankmates. When she lived at SeaWorld Orlando (her birthplace), she acted as an auntie towards newborn calves. Everytime when two of the animals get into an unpleseant fight in the hiearchy, she'll sort it out as possible. Unna came to Texas in 2002 from SeaWorld Orlando. Most of her time is spent with her half-brothers Ky and Tuar (who is also her nephew by SWF's Kalina).

Tuar is youngest of the five whales at SeaWorld Texas. He was the first killer whale calf to recieve a name through an online poll. As a young calf, Tuar loved to play with his half-brother Tekoa and the two youngsters would often interact with guests. At SeaWorld Orlando, Tuar formed a close relationship with his mother Kalina, half brother Tekoa, and half sister Skyla. After Tuar was moved to San Antonio in 2004, he formed a close relationship with his aunt Unna, and half-brothers Keet and Kyuqout. While he dose waterwork with his handlers, he is also a "beginner orca" for new trainers at Shamu Stadium. He usually spends more time with aunt Unna and half brother Ky. Tuar is playful, active, and ready to learn.
